My passion for dermatology began with a deep fascination for skin health and immune function. At UCLA, I was drawn to the science behind skin conditions, which led me to medical school and hands-on research in the Skin Immunology Laboratory.
During my dermatology training, I focused on complex skin diseases and dedicated myself to finding real, lasting solutions for patients. Over the years, I’ve worked with thousands of patients, published over 150 research articles, and led groundbreaking clinical trials on eczema and inflammatory skin conditions.
I created Dermveda to bridge the gap between conventional dermatology and integrative skincare. My goal is to provide clear, science-backed information so people can better understand their skin and make informed, effective choices for lifelong skin health.

Dr. Vivian Shi’s Educational Background
I’ve spent years studying dermatology, immunology, and skin health to become the expert I am today. Here’s how my journey unfolded:
2006 | Discovering My Passion for Dermatology
I earned my Bachelor of Science in Physiological Sciences from UCLA. This was where my passion for skin biology and immune responses first took shape. I became deeply interested in how the skin barrier protects us from disease.
2012 | Medical School & Skin Immunology Research
I completed my MD at the University of Illinois at Chicago. During medical school, I worked in the Skin Immunology Laboratory, researching the pathophysiology of eczema and inflammatory skin diseases. This hands-on research experience fueled my desire to specialize in skin health and disease treatment.
2013 | Internship & Holistic Patient Care
I completed an Internal Medicine Internship at the University of Chicago. NorthShore Health System. Here, I sharpened my clinical skills and developed a patient-centered approach that integrates medical science with whole-body wellness.
2016 | Dermatology Residency & Leadership Role
I pursued my Dermatology Residency at the University of California, Davis (2013-2016). In my final year, I served as Chief Resident, leading research efforts on eczema, atopic dermatitis, and skin barrier repair. This experience shaped my expertise in inflammatory skin conditions and patient care.
Building My Career in Dermatology
After completing my dermatology training, I focused on advancing research, education, and patient care. I have always aimed to improve treatments for inflammatory skin conditions. My goal is to help patients achieve lasting relief.
I am currently an Assistant Professor of Medicine in Dermatology at the University of Arizona. I direct the Eczema and Skin Barrier Specialty Clinic. In this role, I specialize in treating atopic dermatitis, eczema, and skin barrier dysfunction. I provide both clinical care and research, working to develop better solutions for patients with chronic skin conditions.
Before this, I worked as an Associate Professor at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS). I directed the Eczema Clinic and Hidradenitis Suppurativa Clinic. My research focused on chronic inflammatory skin diseases. I studied how to improve long-term treatment strategies. I worked to develop new therapies for lasting relief.
I have also contributed extensively to dermatology research. I have authored more than 150 peer-reviewed articles. I co-edited two dermatology textbooks on Atopic Dermatitis and Hidradenitis Suppurativa. My work has helped shape the understanding of skin barrier health. It has also contributed to new treatment development. I continue to pursue innovative, science-backed solutions for better skin health.
